Bowel incontinence - also known as anal or faecal incontinence - is more common in women than men, and in older people - but is not part of the normal ageing process. The Ultima EMS Rental Unit can help you deal with embarrassing incontinence permanently and without drugs. TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) has no side effects and the unit is easy to operate, strengthening your pelvic floor muscles gently yet effectively.

Pelvic Floor Muscles
The Ultima is based on TENS technology and uses mild electrical impulses to stimulate the muscles of the rectum and pelvic floor. These muscles can become weakened for a variety of reasons: often because of a history of straining due to constipation (other causes of bowel incontinence include diarrhoea, diet, stress, nerve damage and muscle damage). In women, childbirth can also cause weakened pelvic floor muscles, and this damage may not show up until the mid forties. These muscles act as a sling, holding in your lower abdominal cavity. If they are weak, your internal organs can sag, putting pressure on your bowel. You can also lose sensation and muscle tone in the rectum.

Constipation
One of the most common causes of bowel incontinence is constipation. This is because the hardened stool acts as a plug in the rectum, allowing loose, watery faecal matter to build up behind it. This liquid can then escape past the blockage causing leakage. Constipation can also weaken the muscles in the rectum so you have less control over retaining faeces. So it's important that you see your doctor about bowel incontinence - don't let embarrassment stop you.

Diet
For effective treatment you need to: eat a proper healthy diet with plenty of fibre, take exercise, drink water, and avoid possible irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, smoked and spicy foods, certain fruits ie raw apples, and artificial sweeteners such as those in fizzy drinks. All this can help you to digest food properly and prevent diarrhoea. But if your problem is linked to weak pelvic floor or rectal muscles, then the Ultima EMS Bowel Incontinence Rental Unit can help strengthen and tone these, increasing your ability to sense need, and control release.

You're in Charge
The Ultima EMS Bowel Incontinence Rental Unit has three preset programmes, one for urge, one for stress and one for mixed incontinence. Simply insert the small anal probe gently into the rectum. You can choose the level of intensity, and pause or stop the programme. In programme A, for urge incontinence, you will feel a long series of quick impulses. In B, - mixed - you will feel a gentle drawing in of the muscles and a tapping or throbbing sensation. C - stress incontinence - creates a strong squeezing of the muscles, encouraging you to join in with the contractions.

An extra pair of lead wires can be purchased clicking on the link opposite.

Note: always consult your doctor or GP before using this device.
