The human body is composed of approximately 70% water. It is an essential nutrient that is involved in every function of the body.
Water helps transport nutrients and waste products in and out of the cells. It is vital for digestion and absorption of food, and for circulation and excretion.
It is also required for utilisation of water-soluble vitamins (all the B vitamins and vitamin C) and for the maintenance of body temperature.
Exact requirements will vary according to body size, ambient temperature, exercise, and the amount of fruit and vegetables in the diet, but as a general guideline approximately 1.5 - 2 litres per day are recommended, preferably distilled, filtered, or bottled.
This does not include the water in your tea and coffee as these act as diuretics, quickly turning the drinks into urine rather than nourishing the cells.
