Sexual issues

In years gone by when incontinence products consisted of plastic pants and bulky pads, it was difficult to feel sexually attractive.

All that is now in the past.  Modern products are slimline and aesthetically designed so there is no longer a need to feel different.  For women, there are pretty pants with an integral pad suitable for a small urine loss.  Men can use cotton pants with pads discreetly sewn in - providing peace of mind without embarrassment.

Incontinence does little for the libido particularly when one wants to feel at one's best.  Making new friends and forming new relationships can highlight concerns about being incontinent.

It is best if the relationship allows you to discuss your concerns with your partner, particularly if leakage is likely to occur during intercourse.

There are, however, always the inevitable worries:

  • Do I smell?
  • Will I leak during intercourse? ... what if I do?
  • How can I handle it without embarrassing both of us?
  • What will he/she think of me? ... should I deny it? ... will it be a turn-off?
  • Should I pretend that it's just excessive fluid passed at the height of excitement?'

All of these questions are common concerns that are of the utmost importance to most people.

A few useful hints

Choose a nice sexy pair of pants.

It is always wise to empty your bladder before getting started.  Try using the technique of double micturition to ensure your bladder is completely empty.  Once the stream has finished, get up from the toilet, move around or walk to another room and then return to the toilet to pass any remaining urine that may be left in the bladder.  A few good belly coughs will ensure the last drops are passed as the abdominal muscles push down on the bladder.

Intercourse is the very best time for the lady to use her pelvic floor.  It will enhance the enjoyment for her and her partner who will want to feed back just how good you are at squeezing those muscles.  Yes the exercises really do work and if your squeeze can be felt then you must have noticed improvement in controlling stress incontinence.

If you suffer from soreness of the genitals you need to visit your doctor so he or she can prescribe the most appropriate cream both to heal and to soothe the skin.  There is nothing worse than skin soreness to put you off an intimate relationship.  It is important to bathe the skin several times a day because urine is acidic, avoiding the use of highly perfumed soaps or bubble bath that can cause irritation.

In women, the skin irritation or itchiness of the vulva may be caused by a lack of the hormone oestrogen.  If you have an oestrogen deficiency you will not only have vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina) but also the urethra and trigone areas of the bladder which will exacerbate the symptoms of urgency and urge incontinence.   Oestrogen replacement cream will quickly improve the situation.

Other common infections like 'thrush' also need medical attention.

Avoid wearing nylon underwear, which is non-absorbent and tends to make the skin perspire, leading to soreness.
