We are all human. Stumbling at obstacles and lapsing are part of human nature.
You can learn to anticipate such obstacles and treat them as a normal part of everyday life. Do not perceive them as insurmountable problems or failures.
There are a number of obstacles or barriers that you may come across before you start being more physically active. These are normal but if you are prepared for them then they will come as less of a shock. Start to design ways to overcome them. Think of it as a challenge. Use all your creative powers.
The Allied Dunbar National Fitness Survey (ADNFS) found these to be the most common barriers to exercise as you get older:

If several of these seem familiar you are not alone. Dont try and tackle all these issues at once. Perhaps set yourself a target of getting information on how to overcome or reconsider just 1 or 2 of the list above per week.
| Other barriers to exercise include the following: - lack of information (among older people, their families, health-care providers)
- stereotypical images of ageing and physical activity
- inadequate environmental support such as access and transport
- poor exercise history, including bad experiences of sport
- negative attitudes towards sports and exercise
- imbalance of expected effort and perceived gains
- certain medical conditions may require modified activity programmes
|
You are not alone if you have experienced any of these issues. It is more common than you think and if you ask others you will be able to share problems and ways to overcome them.
