Regular breast screening

Recent studies have shown that regular screening using mammography results in 40% fewer women undergoing mastectomies and an increase in the number treated by minor surgery.

A mammogram is a special type of x-ray.  As it is able to reveal cancers too small to be felt, it can potentially detect a cancer that you yourself are not yet aware of.

Combined with your own diligence in respect of regular breast examinations, these two monitoring procedures can dramatically increase the promise of early detection and simple more effective treatment for breast cancer.

Going for a mammogram

When having a mammogram, it can be more convenient to wear a two-piece outfit for ease of access.  It is also advisable not to wear lotions, deodorants or creams on your skin as these can confuse the image.

What does a mammogram look like?

A mammogram is a type of x-ray.  Dense and hard areas appear as white areas on the film, while areas of fat appear grey-black.

Some mammograms reveal a white mass; the shape of this mass will be important in determining its significance and follow-up.  Round smooth edges are likely to denote a benign condition such as a fluid-filled cyst.  A lump/mass that may be cancerous is likely to have irregular borders with finger-like extensions.

A common type of abnormality found on a mammogram is the appearance of white spots grouped as clusters/strings.  These white spots are, in fact, fine particles of calcium and are called microcalcifications. They can be an indication of a problem but do not automatically denote a breast cancer.

A tiny build-up of calcium within the breast tissue can simply be a result of ageing.  The specialist reading your mammogram will be able to determine if it appears suspicious and warrant further investigation.

Remember, you are still entitled to breast screening after the age of 65, but it is unlikely you will be offered an appointment automatically.  It is your right to ask your doctor to arrange screening for you.
